Therapy for DNA Surprises
One-on-one sessions for adults who have discovered their parent(s) are not genetically related to them. This occurs for a variety of reasons, including donor conception or adoption. Some folks who align with this experience may identify as an NPE (Not Parent Expected) or MP (Misattributed Parentage).
If you’ve experienced unexpected DNA results that have challenged your sense of identity and your relationships, therapy can be a safe enough place to explore profound feelings, grieve what could have been, and chart a path forward.
When relevant, your individual therapy experience may benefit from inviting close others (partner, relative, friend) to a session. This differs from family therapy, and this difference can be discussed during an initial consult or at any point during individual therapy.
